Screenshots illustrating this issue
SUMMARY:
Some AOO dialogs provide adjustable columns with column dividers marked by thin
gray lines. One can resize a column by holding the mouse button down on the
divider and dragging it to the desired location. If column divider is moved
outside the right border, the column and its divider may disappear.
Some dialogs prevent this from happening (see point 1.). In other cases, in
order to bring the default layout back, one has to re-invoke
the dialog (see point 2.1.) or even go to extremes and reset
the User Profile (see point 2.2.).
(The attached file "Columns" contains relevant screenshots).
1. Acceptable design
Examples:
- 'Tools > Customize > Events tab'
- Basic IDE, assigning macros to program events - "Assign action" dialog
Consider 'Tools > Customize > Events tab', two columns named:
"Event" and "Assigned Action".
Move the column divider to the right outside the border. Notice that AOO
prevents hidding the column completely, thus it's easy to regain
"hidden" column.
2. Incorrect design
2.1. "Reversible" - easy way
Examples of dialogs:
- in AOO Calc: 'Tools > Share Document', "Share Document" dialog
- 'File > Digital Signatures', "Digital Signatures" dialog
- 'File > Digital Signatures > Sign Document',
"Select Certificate" dialog
Consider 'File > Digital Signatures', "Digital Signatures" dialog.
Four columns, three named: "Signed by", "Digital ID issued by" and "Date".
Move the last column divider to the right outside the border.
Column is hidden. Repeat that operation for the columns: "Signed by" and
"Digital ID issued by". You end up with one column.
To go back to the default layout, close the dialog and reopen it.
All columns are displayed again.
2.2. "Reversible" - an unsual way
Open and Save dialog boxes fall in this category.
(in 'Tools > Options > OpenOffice > General'
in the Open/Save dialogs area select "Use OpenOffice dialogs")
Consider 'File > Open', "Open" dialog
Move in turn column divider for columns: "Date modified", "Size" and "Type".
You end up with one column "Name".
No obvious way to bring the hidden columns back, as with point 2.1.
Deselecting and selecting "OpenOffice dialogs" won't help and one has
to reset the User Profile to fix the problem ("going to extremes").
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
1. Expected behaviour - all dialogs with adjustable columns shall behave
like those mentioned in point 1. above. (other acceptable solution
could be one used e.g. in Windows Registry Editor).
2. Issue observed in AOO 4.1.7 too.
