You might also add to your list (Roman digits, bracketed numbers)
the case [ (a) (b) ...]. See the attached file: "Numbering".

It's not a bug. The feature can be adjusted via settings
in "Bullets and Numbering", "Position" tab
(indent, spacing, and alignment options) or by using styles.

And two additional notes:

1. 
MS Word 2010 (the last version of Word I have a license for)
provides the numbering list with Roman upper/lower case that works 
as may be expected.

Perhaps there is a room for improving AOO in this regard?
