Rather than hold up our 1.6 release on waiting for airlift compressor to commit
the patch and release, I made a variant of their patch that pulls enough code
into our project that we avoid needing anything from airlift slice. Hopefully,
they release a new version soon and we can make a patch to remove my hack.
