[~arp] please read the updated version of the doc. The pull request / Jira is
still open even if we had a conclusion. The only thing what I do is writing
down the conclusion of what we agreed on to finish the design discussion and
close issues.
The conclusion is exactly the same what you wrote: "we are not considering
adding the third mode right now". And the doc also includes the definition of
the current compatibility guarantees and expected behavior (that's why I would
like to keep it instead of fully drop it).
It's good to have for reference to show any potential user and good to have it
as a memo what we agreed on.
