Attila Doroszlai commented on HDDS-12046:
-----------------------------------------
bq. is there a reason not to update the latest tag?
>From users' point of view:
- {{latest}} is like "give me any version, I don't care which one". You don't
really know which version of Ozone it is until you pull the image and run Ozone.
- The image is not automatically pulled again if we publish a new one later.
So you may be thinking you are running the most recent version of Ozone, but
can be outdated.
- {{latest}} used to be built from the {{ozone-latest}} branch (of the
{{apache/ozone-docker}} repo). It had the same content as a specific version
(e.g. 1.4.0), but it was a different image. It needed to be pulled separately,
occupied another 1GB+ on disk, etc.
- Manually pulling a new image keeps the previous image around, just untags it.
Untagged images need to be cleaned up manually. This can happen with
versioned images, too, but versioned images are seldom re-published. With
{{latest}}, it is the regular case as we release new versions of Ozone.
>From build point of view, to prevent the duplicate image problem, we can add
>the {{latest}} tag whenever building a new versioned image. But how does the
>automation know not to update the {{latest}} tag to 1.4.2 if released after
>2.0.0?
https://vsupalov.com/docker-latest-tag/ has a few more items related to
{{latest}}.
> apache/ozone:latest docker image is using Ozone 1.4.0
