Per my understanding Hadoop compression is at client side, the compressed bytes 
passed over to the storage and compression streams manages the compression and 
decompression. I believe the same compression streams might work, but I have 
not tried myself. 
Even in HDFS we don't have on the fly compression. Some of old Jira in HDFS for 
doing compression, but we have not put any efforts there.
