One major change from 1.3.0 to master, is that we have greatly increased the
number of open pipelines allowed, based on the disks * nodes on the cluster.
I think a flame chart would be useful to point at which part of the code is
slow. Obviously the lock will limit things, but we probably need some locking,
so it may be slow operations within the lock that are the problem.
