Closing. The premise, silently breaking reads of existing data, does not hold. Pre-fix the ALTER already fails before commit: NestedColumnModifier has no MULTISET case, so it throws ColumnNotExistException and nothing is written. No evolved data is ever read, so there is nothing to corrupt.
