Nice change, I'm +1 (non-binding) and I confirmed the tests fail on master.
I got this minimal reproduction from Code, which crystallized my
understanding.
```java
var left = parseMessageType(
"message m { optional group nested { optional int32 value; } }");
var right = parseMessageType(
"message m { optional group nested { optional int64 value; } }");
left.union(right, false); // Explicitly request non-strict merging
```
That will throw an exception, which is bad.
