-----------------------------------------------------------------
Please have a look -v2. It does:
# Avoid the region boundary checks for simple selects, which is what we want.
HBase will do the right thing, no need to restart the scans. (And note that
HBase will still invalidate the HConnection's region cache on the client, on a
region by region basis, so the cache won't stay stale)
# Reintroduces a maximum timestamp for the SELECT part of UPSERT SELECT only.
This might be a bit controversial, but is absolutely unavoidable if we want
correct UPSERT SELECT results during splits.
With that I have been running large UPSERT SELECTS, while randomly splitting
and I get always correct results.
[~akshita.malhotra] will add a test as part of PHOENIX-3817.
[~jamestaylor] if you could review this I'd greatly appreciate that.

> UPSERT SELECT throws a StaleRegionBoundaryCacheException immediately after a
> split. On the other hand, an upsert followed by a select for example works
> absolutely fine
> org.apache.phoenix.schema.StaleRegionBoundaryCacheException: ERROR 1108
> (XCL08): Cache of region boundaries are out of date.
