@snazy sorry for all the pings. I took another look at your comments and the PR, and I identified one idea that I wanted to get your POV on. I added [this commit](https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/433/commits/59361ed0bec6c3a2f8c609b32bbf4a9ffda12e66) to bound the extra serde. I don't love that this uses an exception to drive the flow control, but what do you think like an approach like this?
