Hi Jan. Chronologically this ticket here is newer and it still makes sense to
me at least to tackle deprecation of the sorting merge policy separately from
supporting index sorting. I just turned the patch here into
[https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/313] via apply to point-in-time git
history and then merging in latest {{solr/main}} (though the partial
documentation change got lost in the process due to re-org but it can be added
back separately later).
