This issue is of interest to me as well, and I agree it would make sense to add
to core, though I don't know if/when I would be able to work on it.
I did want to note for other interested parties (though I haven't actually
tried to make this work, so I may be missing something?) that as of SOLR-8673
(Solr 8.8) it should be possible to introduce this functionality as a plugin,
with no modifications to core Solr.
[~TimOwen] I notice you commented on this issue and on SOLR-8673, so perhaps
you could comment on whether you've managed to get this to work as a plugin?
