Are you using Multi Cluster Services in GKE? If so there is a known issue with them and named target ports that will be fixed in a future version: https://cloud.google.com/kubernetes-engine/docs/how-to/multi-cluster-services#container_port If not, then I would suggest issuing a bug-report with GKE. Using a targetPort name is very much supported by Kubernetes, and GKE not supporting it would be a pretty big deal, I think.
