It's more than a year later, and I really want to push to get us away from 
having this split brain modes of running Solr.   I don't have any plans to do 
this, as it goes against just making one mode of running Solr, so I'm going to 
close this with a won't do.   However, if someone else DOES want to do this 
work, please do reopen it, and I'm very happy to review any PR's to add this to 
the bin/solr auth tool.
