I have opened a new pull request to help move this contribution forward, as the
original PR appears inactive. I fetched the original commits, resolved
conflicts with the latest changes on {{{}main{}}}, added tests and a small fix,
and preserved full credit to the original author (who is also added as a
contributor in the new PR).
