I have now run the same seed (71E7F210A62A9B8C) on pre-#5001 main `0cc328310f8`, and `DirectUpdateHandlerTest` passed 7 of 7 there, while it failed on post-merge main and passed on this PR's head. That sequence does not prove #5001 caused it: #5001 changed only Admin UI JavaScript, none of it on this test's path, and this test's deletion visibility is timing sensitive, so a single run either way is weak evidence. The structural point in the earlier comment stands (#4965 touches nothing in the update, commit, expunge or rollback path).
