The question/concern is... is it a reasonable expectations to be able to query on a field after a schema API change without explicitly doing something in-between. I've not used the schema API so I don't know. I'm sympathetic to backwards-compatibility, and I'm sympathetic to a user having to do *something* (an explicit commit or reload). If there was some implicit commit/reload... that would not have been my choice had I designed the API in the first place. But I didn't.
