The Non-ANSI master run on 2026-10-23 fails two BasicCharVarcharTestSuite cases
with SPARK_ANSI_SQL_MODE=false (JDK 17, Scala 2.13):
- "SPARK-58794: inventoried shapes do not leak CHAR/VARCHAR under
standardSemantics": zeroifnull(c) returns a CHAR/VARCHAR type outside the
test's permitted pass-through list.
- "SPARK-58794: CHAR/VARCHAR vs non-string follow STRING for compare and
COALESCE": typeof(coalesce(cast('123' AS CHAR(3)), 123)) returns char(3), while
the STRING comparison returns string.

Related feature work: SPARK-58794.
Investigate the intended Non-ANSI typing and whether the correction belongs in
type coercion or test setup/assertions. These are CI observations; local
reproduction and root cause are not yet established. Verify the focused cases
with ANSI mode disabled and enabled before proposing a fix.
