Hmmm, that might be a bug in Hive then. Can you execute commands on the Spark 
shell even after the error? If you can, could you run the following statements 
and post the result?

val path = new Path("file:/tmp/hive")
val lfs = FileSystem.get(path.toUri(), sc.hadoopConfiguration)
lfs.getFileStatus(path).getPermission()
