I think [~rxin] is already sort of doing this in the broader
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-12615 ticket, and this overlaps a
bit with my https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-12618 (but either this
or Reynold's could come first).
