(Revision 2; 14 Dec, 2006)

PREAMBLE
It was a bit hard to identify the graphics in the specification document,
because the single graphic elements were scattered around (buttons etc.).
Therefore some of the information in this issue may not be correct – please
excuse that.

Attached to this issue is a PDF file (in German) which originally has been
created for the discussion of the first specification of the update
functionality in the last year. Unfortunately, there never was a chance for me
to test it the specification against a real OpenOffice.org. But I think, it
contains some ideas concerning the user interaction.

GENERAL
In my opinion, the message texts for the update are a bit short for the average
user the function is targeted at. Generally, they should be more “guided”
through the installation process; e.g. by explaining what to expect from an
update (features, security fixes, ...). Maybe there is a chance to integrate the
website for the corresponding version information – or the version information
itself.

Another example for a short messages can be found in section 1.1.4:
“OpenOffice.org 2.1 is available. Ready for downloading.”
At this point I'm not sure if the user is aware what to expect from
“OpenOffice.org 2.1”. Although there some buttons at the bottom of the windows,
there is no hint what to do now. Maybe it would be better to display:
“An new version of OpenOffice.org is available in the internet.
You can download OpenOffice.org 2.1 by clicking the “Download” button.”
For some more information on the dialogs, please refer also to the PDF file
attached to this issue.

THE WINDOW
Although the user navigated to the item “Check for updates” in the help menu,
the window title „Check for updates“ is a bit misleading because “Download” and
“Install” buttons are presented.

I don't like the idea of creating a wizard like window which does not behave
like a wizard. To explain that: The user is required to first “Download” (left
button) and then to “Install” (middle button) the update. Normally, the controls
at the bottom present something like “OK”, “Cancel” - nearly independent
actions. The manual action for downloading and installing is not that obvious.
May be this is one of the mentioned graphics errors: are the two buttons
separated by a wider space than usual?

I'm not sure why the white input controls are used to just show a status like
“Checking...”. As far as I remember, only the font preview uses this kind of
display element. Besides the use for “A new update is found” the description
text box is rather meaningless. Even more if some of the warning messages appear
there or in own message boxes. I think it is “safe” to remove it and use the
main information area for that.

SECTION 1.1.1 “The checking”
I'm not sure what graphic element is used at this point. It looks like the
Mozilla Firefox indeterminate wait”ring” - is it anywhere else used in
OpenOffice.org? Why not using a normal indeterminate waitbar?

SECTION 1.1.4 “A new update is found”
Although the bubble text for the update information is similar to the one of
Mozilla Firefox, I would prefer not to introduce another UI element. I'm not
sure if there is a chance to use the “Help Agent” structure to inform the user
(instead using a bulb you could use another symbol). A click on that element
could bring the “Check for updates” window to the front.

SECTION 1.1.5 “The download has been started manually or automatically”
Why is the symbol for running download and finished download the same?

SECTION 1.1.7 “Running a download, when a new update is found”
I do not understand what notification is delayed if the old “update” has been
downloaded?

SECTION 1.1.8 “Starting the installation”
The bubble text appears for the information of the new update. What if the user
does not want to start the update? There is no way to close the message or to
show that it will disappear after a short period of time.
Line 184: If the clicks on “Install later” the user is not informed how to
install the update later. Even if the message pops up again when OpenOffice.org
is started the next time. By the way: Does this require to restart the OO.o
quickstarter?
Line 190: If the user clicks on “Install now”, how is he informed to have
sufficient rights to install (like in section 1.1.4)?
Table 10: The german translation of “need” is misleading. I think it is better
to show “ist es notwendig OpenOffice.org zu beenden” instead of “wird beendet”.
Besides this, the user may think that even if he clicks on “Install later” the
program is closed. The message should be improved.

SECTION 1.1.10 “The page 'Online Update' in Tools / Options”
What happens if the user clicks on the “Check now...” button?

OTHER IDEAS
What happens when: OpenOffice.org downloaded an update that never was installed.
The user does not use the program for a longer period of time (e.g. months).
Does OpenOffice.org first check for new updates or are the old ones installed
first? This is not covered in section 1.1.5 or 1.1.6.

How to remind the user for a waiting update when he quits OpenOffice.org? A
similar message dialog to the one in section 1.1.8 could be presented.

Why not use OpenOffice.org quickstarter in the taskbar of Microsoft Windows to
provide information on the download status or information on new versions? The
usual taskbar information bubbles could be used.

I hope I didn't forgot too much ;-) Thanks in advance!!!
