good that you found a workaround!
I have good news, an the improved mailing system is implemented and in the
development branch that will form the next release.
You'll be able to configure and test the mail server settings in the UI and
pipeline elements will use these to send mail notifications. There is also a
new configuration option to throttle the amount of mails sent per pipeline.
