After downloaded from email attachment

Fairly recent problem that may have started happening when I upgraded to 3.3

When I "save as" an .odt document as a Microsoft Word .doc (97/2000/HP), I
instead get a plain text document. While I can open this in Open Office, when I
email this supposed ".doc" to someone with Microsoft word, they cannon open it.
When I try to open this file from an email attachment (if I cc'd myself), it no
longer opens in Open Office and instead opens in TextEdit.

I have never had this problem before. I have not changed my method of saving,
nor have changed my method of attaching a file.
