There's an apparent contradiction in your Help info that is accessed directly
in the program as opposed to that found in the online user guide. I was simply
trying to insert page numbers on a document and tried to use "To Insert Page
Numbers" from the Help accessed directly in the program, a section I've pasted
below. Notice that the instruction is to "Choose Insert - Header - (name of
page style) or Insert - Footer - (name of page style) to add a header or footer
to all pages with the current page style." I spent a lot of time at it, but
couldn't figure out how to do it, either this way or in all the other Help for
page numbering in the program. The only option for "(name of page style)"
seemed to be the default, which resulted in each page being numbered "1".
Out of desperation, I looked for help on the website and found in the online
user guide the "Simple page numbering" instruction that I've pasted below.
Problem solved immediately, as it should have been when I originally consulted
the Help within the program.
I appreciate OpenOffice very much and wanted to alert you to this problem so
that other users wouldn't have to go through the problem I had. Thanks for
your work on the OpenOffice project.
In Writer, a page number is a field that you can insert into your text.
TO INSERT PAGE NUMBERS
Choose Insert - Fields - Page Number to insert a page number at the current
cursor position.
If you see the text "Page number" instead of the number, choose View - Field
names.
However, these fields will change position when you add or remove text. So it
is best to insert the page number field into a header or footer that has the
same position and that is repeated on every page.
Choose Insert - Header - (name of page style) or Insert - Footer - (name of
page style) to add a header or footer to all pages with the current page style.
SIMPLE PAGE NUMBERING
The simplest case is to have the page number at the top of every page and
nothing more. To do this, put the cursor on the header and select Insert >
Fields > Page Number.
