Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Erratic behaviour of format paintbrush: only the style
name changes, but the format doesn't change
Classification: Application
Product: Word processor
Version: OOo 3.3 RC10
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Mac OS X
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P1
Component: formatting
AssignedTo: [email protected]

I suppose that this kind of uncircumstantiated issue will simply be ignored, I
can't blame you. The fact is that it happens frequently, but I wasn't able to
find a pattern, in a hundred or so occurences. So I can't exactly describe
"why".Surely, I can describe "what" happens. Please consider that despite my
bad english and my vagueness I am a reputable software developer with about 30
years of experience. So I should know what I am saying :-)
Herein under,
- by "source paragraph" I mean the paragraph whose style I want to replicate
(where I "copy the style")
- by "target paragraph" I mean the paragraph whose style I want to substitute
with the style of the "source paragraph" (where I "paste the style")
If I apply the "format paintbrush" to a paragraph, in some situations (still
undescribable) the target paragraph will get ONLY the "style name" of the
source paragraph, but won't change any format feature: it will remain
identical, even though the style name has changed to the style name of the
"source paragraph".
In other words, this may be an example (it just happened):
1) I have a whole paragraph X in default style
2) I select a whole paragraph Y with "heading 3" style, including end of
paragraph, and press the "format paintbrush" (copy the style)
3) I drag the format paintbrush over the entire extent of paragraph X,
including end of paragraph.
4) Now, paragraph X is marked as "Heading 3", but it retained its original
format. Not only it is marked as "Heading 3", it also appears in the
index/summary along with the others "heading 3" in the document,
If I want paragraph to look like the other "Heading 3" paragraphs, I must
change its format (selecting the right font, the right character size...).
That's it. Excuse me for explaining it in a dummy-proof way, but still I can't
believe my eyes. Probably, trying to tamper with Writer until the issue happens
would take more time than directly going to the source code and understand why
it may happen at all.
