Currently, the Python test suite refers to a set of independent test files that
must be run manually (for both Python 2 & 3). We should clean up and refactor
the Python test suite so that it can be run in an automated fashion.
In addition to automation, we need to clean up the tests. Many of the current
tests could be refactored as simple Pythonic "doctests", which can serve as
both tests and examples of usage.
