Here is a WIP patch that I had started working on. The next step in my plan was
to add a DataSinkDescriptor() and DataSourceDescriptor() to replace the 2
separate descriptors for input/initializer and output/committer. That sounds
similar to your second comment in the description.
Feel free to take over the patch or assign the jira to me.
