Looking for feedback / review of this. Note that the two example plugins never
worked, and they still don't. I only fixed what I changed, to get the examples
to compile, more work has to be done.
Note that I also think these "hooks" are somewhat flawed. At a minimum they
ought to support more than one callback per hook (a linked list), we should
file a separate bug on that. I think we can model this after the hooks Alan
added for life cycles.
