We could look at using a read/write lock for doing the synchronization to disk, but there aree some risks to that, primarily that if during a read a cache object is detected as bad, the directory is updated to delete the object. This might be acceptable, in that there is no loss if the update isn't written or the in-memory update can't cause a corruption race with the stripe directory copy.
