Hiya Stella.

Sadly Photoshop (and many other graphics programs) struggle with the complexity
of the png format. The compression methods and tool[1] I use are indeed
lossless, however, Photoshop has a bug so that it doesn't handle Paletted images
with alpha transparency correctly. Luckily for us, this problem has been fixed
in OpenOffice since 2.0.4 with Issue 60479. To test this, just drag and drop the
icon of concern into OOo- it will display fine. :-)

So moving forward:
- I have provided a simple tool (drag'n'drop) to optimize your artwork at
source[1] (in addition to providing optimized artwork). Currently this tool is
for WinXP- but I'm putting every effort into getting a Mac port done ASAP. It
will function something like 'Ping', which you might want to try in the meantime
(although much less efficient)[2].

- While optimizing the images might make editing in Photoshop difficult, I can
provide another tool to 'inflate' the image again to avoid the Photoshop bug.
Alternatively, what I do, is always keep a spare copy of the artwork for editing
and only optimize the images before adding them to CVS. Finally, there is a
Photoshop plug-in which will be released soon (hopefully!), that handles png
images correctly and lets you optimize them [3].

- As for the issue of image naming, my tool / method cannot change the image
name... I think the confusion may have arisen from the duplicate icons within
OOo. From my draft Icon Audit[4] the 'open' icon is duplicated ~7x. The
'avmedia.zip' attachment I provided is suitable for CVS inclusion, but may not
match the icon names you have in IconTool. This will always be the case, until
external contributors have access (or even knowledge!) of this mysterious
tool... ;-)

- Currently this Issue is set to 'Fixed' (I think you meant 'WONTFIX'), but I
can see no reason to avoid integrating this Patch into CVS. The Crystal and
Industrial icon themes have been optimized for OOo 2.2, and have been tested and
approved by Novell. The solution is of course for you to have the Mac port of my
tool, so that you can Optimize these images yourself. Until this is done,
(unless you have access to a WinXP machine), the best solution (in the short
term) is for you and I to work together to integrate these images.

I look forward to moving this Issue forwards.
Please contact me through IZ if I can provide any further assistance or
information.

Best Regards,
Andrew
