Hi Raindrops.
Thankfully OOo already has a more sophisticated solution- Styles! ;-)
Create 'Style-Color1' and 'Style-Color2', then just style your text as
required.
Also makes it much easier to change your color choices if needed.
The UI works nicely if you dock the stylist (F11) to one side. Only problem is
that this doesn't seem to address your issue with Highlighting / background
colors, since they are currently applied to the paragraph / line level rather
than at a character level. I think this is covered by another Issue and will be
fixed.
IMHO this is a far more elegant solution, and would suggest this Issue is a
Wontfix.
