Thanks for the response. I mean plain in the sense of password storage, not authentication mechanism -- I didn't know which mechanism I was using. I set AuthMech to LOGIN, and mbsync connected, but then got a UIDVALIDITY error for each mailbox. I moved the ~/.mbsync directory to a different location and tried again, and it looks like it's going to resync each mailbox: slave: 71 messages, 0 recent master: 71 messages, 0 recent Synchronizing... M: +0/71 *0/0 #0/0 S: +0/71 *0/0 #0/0 So I stopped it for the time being, until I'm sure I've got everything else configured correctly. >>From my >> dovecot.conf: > >> ssl = no >> disable_plaintext_auth = no >> > this is what enables LOGIN (among others, i suppose). > >> auth_verbose = yes >> auth_mechanisms = plain >> > and this enables PLAIN. which is somehow misconfigured. All right, so I probably want to be using PLAIN, not LOGIN, but I've got the PLAIN setup wrong somehow, almost certainly in my dovecot configuration. I'll play around with that for a bit, and ask on the dovecot list if I can't get it working.
