Thank you so much for your help. I re-read the man page but things are

When I want to 'delete' a message in mutt, I am actually moving it
into the trash folder, but the message is not marked for deletion.
Also I never empty the trash. 
Does this use of a trash folder include the scenario you are warning
me about by saying I should not have my trash in a regular channel?
After all, it is just only "one more folder".

I have not set the "Trash" option and the manpage says it defaults to
"None". Does this mean I am already not using mbsync's trash feature?

I am not using the Trash option afaik. 
What is also strange is that my setup works nicely with three IMAP
accounts/servers, but not with two others. I wonder why.
Of the two problematic ones one for sure is a MS Exchange box.

Thank you for any advice, or link to additional documentation I could
read.
