normally i'd suggest adding -V to the mbsync command line and posting
the log, but in your case it seems that the local mailbox is making
trouble, which is usually more serious than an uncooperative imap server
...

possible approaches:
- check for memory corruption: run the whole thing under
   valgrind --tool=memcheck
- see where it hangs: run under gdb --args mbsync ..., ctrl-c, bt.
  this really only makes sense if the cpu is spinning at 100%.
(both previous points require a debug build to be useful)
- run the thing through strace. this log will be *huge*. send it to me
  privately if you do that.
