which totally doesn't surprise me after reading about morphos ...

i don't think i would want to integrate code which would reimplement the
missing libc functionality.

in principle it would be possible to make the configure check non-fatal
and introduce some ifdefs to make the feature plain unavailable. that
would be acceptable.
