OK, I think I understand now what's going on.

The script is invoked automatically by mswatch. I guess the solution
is to wait a couple of minutes before editing the Xlabels of my
outgoing messages, i.e., give time for mswatch to activate and call
mbsync, so that renaming takes place before the mark for deletion,
