i think the duplication is a result of almost everything in gmail being
a virtual folder. you need to choose whether you want to sync "All Mail"
(and use a client-side VF solution) or sync specific virtual folders
(with mutually exclusive labels) and exclude "All Mail". i think most
people go for the latter approach.
