OK, that's helpful: I wasn't sure how to interpret the error. So, if I
understand correctly, it's simply that the server drops the
connection.

No argument on outlook.com's imap "implementation" being crap - i have
also been bitten by the fact that it returns only an approximate
message size in the past, resulting in data loss. I suspect MS are
providing a broken IMAP implementation in order to dissuade you from
using it.

Anyway, what I've resorted to is using davmail to bridge between
outlook.com and the local machine, and am running mbsync against the
davmail IMAP port. So far, this seems to work, although a lot slower
than a true IMAP connection would.
