Would it be possible to have an equivalent of MaxMessages that applies
to the "far" side? Maybe by adding a qualifier in the configuration:

  MaxMessages count [far|near]

or another directive?

This seems to be the only option that introduces a functional difference
between the near and far side.

MaxMessages implies the user wants to keep the near side with a subset
of the messages, leaving the entire archive available on the far.
I've been doing the exact opposite for a long time: I keep a subset
available on the remote so that I can have functional webmail when I'm
away, however I keep a full archive on the side running mbsync instead.

For this reason, ever since the switch to the far/near nomenclature,
I've been using near/far exactly in the opposite sense of the meaning,
which is ... weird. It made a lot of sense when using master/slave, but
since that ship has sailed, I'd love to make far/near less confusing in
some other way. Making them functionally equivalent seems to be a good
option IMHO.
