just play along and adjust the name of the remote box in your config.
optionally, you can also adjust the local name and rename the maildir.
Renaming the remote box resolved the issue.

This explanation makes sense to me. In any case, after the syncing appeared to
be working again, I re-indexed mu and the number of messages indicated is now
what I would expect.
