why did you pick _these_ debugging options? when you get a protocol
error, the first thing to try would be -Dn (or even -DN).
(and -D implies -V, but anyway.)
anyway, i've seen this error both myself and reported, so there must be
something to it. reliably reproducing it is another thing, though.
you can try reverting 859b7dd7f and later ac3b5186b.
