pacman -S db does not fix the problem for version -2; all still works
fine on version -1.

I will just pin pacman to this version for now.

I don't mind trying to debug this further, but if I am the only person
in the world with this problem, and I have a simple work around, it does
not seem worth your time to me to pursue this further. Thank you both
for the timely responses.
