Another possibility might be to set up one Java
process that runs as a PDF print server, accepting
socket connections to be fed PDF documents over
streams, to which you should be able to write directly
with iText.  The print server could use ghostScript or
some other application to print the PDFs.  I think you
would have to create temp files for ghostScript,
however.
