After the pdf is created you can even show it on chinese windows that it will look the same. I suspect that you are reading text encoding in Cp1251 and as this is the default encoding of russian windows it works correctly. Western windows use Cp1252 hence the blanks. Don't use the default encoding, if this is the problem, I'm just guessing.
