I tried:
fontFactory.register( ( getClass().getClassLoader().getResource( "fonts/verdana.ttf" )
).getPath(), "verdana" );

and still get a java.lang.NullPointerException.

while previous without getClassLoader() was throwing a

ExceptionConverter: java.io.FileNotFoundException:
file:\D:\CSProjects\Project1\MyProject1.jar!\com\name\folder1\fonts\verdana.ttf (The
filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect)

Any idea?
Many thanks
