No idea. I would start tossing in
System.out.println's to see what's going on... :)

The methods in PdfContentByte take
com.lowagie.text.Image arguments. To get an
instance
of com.lowagie.text.Image from a GIF or JPEG
you
can
use Image.getInstance(filename),
Image.getInstance(fileURL), or
new Image(fileURL).
This is all self-evident from the Javadoc API,
which I
personally find to be of more immediate use
than
the
tutorial. I usually go to the tutorial and

only
when I can't make sense of what is supposed to
happen

I got it to work (sort of). For a test I tried converting my GIF to a JPEG
and inserted that and the JPEG worked! It must be something to do with my
GIF encoding. I'm gonna try to get my GIF generated from another app and
see what happens. Thanks all for your help.

GIF
encoding. No luck...I still can't get my servlet to run...still the blank

You can use ColumnText to place Paragraphs at precise positions. Bruno's
suggestion is the best one to use. Try it first and if it doesn't suit you
try with ColumnText.

Paulo Soares

Bruno: thanks for your response. I'm still not quite clear on this
(and
yes I've read every page of the tutorial and FAQ and some of the Java
docs).
When you say "yes and no", does that mean that no, they can't be mixed
on a
page unless I'm using PageEvents to place a chunk?
That was what I meant (but you aren't limited to the Chunk object).
I want to have fine
control over where a paragraph begins but I don't want to have to place
the
paragraph line by line using ContentByte stuff.
I think there is an example with Paragraphs in Paulo's examples bundle.
Or you can look at:
http://www.lowagie.com/iText/examples/Chap1108.java
As you can see, I create Outlines for every paragraph:
class PageOutline extends PdfPageEventHelper {
// the paragraph number
private int n = 0;
// we override only the onParagraph method
public void onParagraph(PdfWriter writer, Document document, float
position) {
n++;
PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
PdfDestination destination = new
PdfDestination(PdfDestination.FITH, position);
PdfOutline outline = new PdfOutline(cb.getRootOutline(),
destination, "paragraph " + n);
cb.addOutline(outline);
}
}
Instead of using the position-parameter to create a PdfDestination that
points o
the start of every new Paragraph that is added. You could use this
position to draw
a line on the PdfContentByte...

You can't. You'll have to keep by yourself a reference to the cell or an
indication that the cell is empty. You may sub-class PdfPTable to keep the
info and do a cast in PdfPTableEvent to get the info.

On my PdfPTableEvent I have a loop that I draw
something on the first column. The problem is that I
don't want to draw if the cell text is blank.
My question is, how can I find out, if the cell
contains any text, before the drawing?
Thank you in advance,

It doesn't help much to post text in some charset that may not be the
charset of the reader. It's better to post the Unicode of the characters. I
suppose you need Eastern Europe characters. The standard windows fonts all
have the needed characters. Use:
BaseFont bf = BaseFont.createFont("c:\\winnt\\fonts\\arial.ttf",
BaseFont.IDENTITY_H, true);

Unless the report writer supports Unicode there's nothing that can be done
afterwards. There's a report writer called jasperreports that supports
Unicode and as far as I know was already used to produce reports in chinese
and russian.

Hi All
I am new to iText and am generating PDF reports using a report writer
which displays data from database.
The data in my database is UNICODE encoded, however the PDF report
produced by my report writer does not display these unicode data
properlly.
Is there a way i can use iText to convert the source PDF to another PDF
which can recognise the Unicode characters?
Please help

Subject: [iText-questions] Histogram in pdf
Hi,
I am building horizontal histograms in pdf. Each cell of histogram
is
proportional to the total for that category. Now if the total is too
large
and the value for one cell is small then the percentage value for that
cell
is too small to hold the count for that cell.
For example if for the complete histogram there are 5000 items and for
one
of the cell the count is say 125 and hence the cell width will be 2.5%.
In
such a small widht of the cell i am not able to display the data "125"
and
this data in turns get displayed in vertical thus distorting the
histogram
height.
Can you please help me out.
Thanks,
