Yeah, I was planning on using PdfContentByte since it provides complete access to the Postscript language set. I just wanted to start in the text package and make it part of the whole API rather than skipping straight to PDF.

As for the kind of layout, you know how art directors are. They aren't happy unless a layout is just so. As far as I'm concerned, letting things flow automatically as it is now, is fine with me. But they want to be able to place images, text blocks, and other graphics with precision within the PDF document.

At any rate, I've started developement on a Layer class that will support precise positioning of contained Element objects. I intend to use a clipping path to ensure that only those items contained in the Layer appear. I think this will work well, but will require modification of Document and PdfDocument to make it work properly.

If you are interested, I'd like to offer this as part of the iText API when (and if) I get it working properly... :)

You can place items precisely in the page with PdfContentByte. Here the
problem is not the precision but what kind of layout do you need; you can do
everything but it takes some work.

Subject: [iText-questions] Layers?

iText is great. I've like how it allows me to generate a report in PDF
format from a Java application. Very convenient. However, I'm now
running into a small dilemma. Management wants more precise control
over placement if items on the page, rather than just depending on the
luck of text flow or table flow.

Is there currently or planned support for this type of precise
placement of items? This would be comparable to layers in HTML (using
the <div> tag). If not, I have been experimenting with writing my own
Java class that will accomplish this using a clipping path.

Thanks,
Andrew
