I read a comment made by Paulo Soares, regarding an "artificial limit" in iText, that is 8192 pages as maximum PDF file size, given that Acrobat could not handle a larger file. He also pointed out the possibility of extend it.

Currently our customer wants to see reports up to 50,000 pages
generated. No excuses. He's been generating reports up to 5,000 pages without problem. We've started talks to negotiate this number. However,
it's almost for sure that we'll have to support very large reports.
And quickly. :-O
One strategy of course is to break down the report into smaller chunks, and we already started working around the clock the development of the logic necesary to carry out this task.
Nevertheless we want to experiment generating very large reports. We'll thank any advice to this respect. Our findings are being published at
http://www.lucidees.com/~javiercv/jr-large-pdf.html , and of course the
lists where we're getting your valuable help.
Thanks in advance.
Javier
