1 and 2 sound right (although I wouldn't think there is truly a concept of font "installation" in a basic Unix environment, hence my use of the word "add" as in "have the file present"), but honestly, your final statement is beyond my experience. Fortunately, in my travels through the iText universe I have never yet had to deal with fonts other than those included within iText... :)
